SMEG: Société Monégasque de l'Electricité et du Gaz

A word brought into common parlance by 80s sit-com "Red Dwarf", it's also the acronym representing the Monacan electricity and gas supplier. The utility company has a lovely website, where you can sign up to a SMEG newsletter, and browse a section on the site which translates to "SMEG and you". It all makes me wish my language skills were better.

Of course, there's also the much-loved Italian appliance manufacturer, named after Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (a metal enamelling factory in the village of Guastalla). UK readers will be glad to know of smegdirect.co.uk, which allows you to get genuine SMEG parts sent straight to your door.
