The new year is almost a twelfth done, but what can we expect from the next eleven months? Spykee: Home security, robotic style

It’s Monday morning and you’re sitting at your desk at work when you suddenly have a mental aberration – did I switch the iron off? Your blood pressure rises as your mind races through a catalogue of grisly scenarios. In reality, however, your choices are simple – 1) convince yourself you did indeed switch it off; 2) gamble and prepare yourself for the possibility of a smouldering pile of ash when you return home; 3) charge home in the car at break neck speed only to discover that iron isn’t even close to being plugged in.

I now give you a fourth option and one that is not only the most appealing; it’s pretty damn cool as well.

The Meccano company has been in business for over one hundred years and has built up a worldwide reputation for keeping people of all ages amused with its model construction kits. Now they have a new toy in their range and it’s centred around home security.

Spykee is a robot that will prowl the rooms of your home and beam the pictures via a webcam live and direct to your computer in the office. You can control Spykee remotely so if you what him to go upstairs and check on the babysitter then off he goes. (SpykeeWorld.com)
