The Eyes Have It
By Helen Potter
We've been through breast enlargements, reductions and realignments. Nose jobs, tummy tucks and even a recent fad for bum implants have all appeared on the plastic surgery radar, but the latest craze set to send the world a-flutter is an eyelash transplant.
"This is a brand new procedure for the general public (and) it is going to explode," said Dr Alan Bauman at an event that was billed as 'the world's first live eyelash surgery workshop'.
No more the extravagant spending on mascara, for only around $3000 an eye you can have the eyelashes of your dreams 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The transplant uses the same 'plug and sew' techniques of hair transplants for balding men.

A small cut is made at the back of the scalp and 30 or 40 hair follicles are removed, which are then sewn individually onto the patient's eyelids. The procedure can be done under local anaesthetic.
Due to the use of head hair, the eyelashes will continue to grow past the normal length and so require trimming and sometimes curling to avoid the Cousin It look.
The world's longest (natural) eyelash is currently believed to belong to Mel Grubbe, measuring up at just under 3 inches long.
