The Turin Shrub
By Father Robert Wadkins
Tunbridge Wells Parish Church, Kent.
The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth, centuries old that bears the image of a crucified man, whom many believe to be Christ. Here, in a front garden in Tunbridge Wells, not altogether unlike Eden, we have found what we believe to be the living equivalent, the Turin Shrub. Click for larger image.
Within the leafy exterior, a face can be distinguished not unlike that seen on the original cloth. Carbon dating suggests that the foliage is about 2000 years old, which puts it in the correct timeframe. Sceptics have leapt to criticise the new finding, claiming it’s nothing more than an optical illusion. “One face in a bush is worth two in the hand,” they say. Vatican officials have been cautious over the new find, saying “Measure thy cloth ten times, thou canst cut it but once”. Sound advice.
