Enough To Drive You Mad
Every week, the Null dissects the most self-evident studies and pointless papers not to hit the headlines. It's harsh, but funny. This week, Andrew Impey learns how not to drive.
The UK’s roads now carry over 26 million cars and we all know that amongst them there are some pretty shoddy drivers. However, all this is undoubtedly about to change following the news that teaching people to drive can actually improve their driving skills.
In a study, which borders on age discrimination, drivers over the age of 70 underwent eight hours of classroom instruction and two hours behind the wheel. On subsequent tests they performed better than those who had not had extra tuition.
Presumably this connection between teaching and performance could be implemented across all age groups and not merely restricted to the OAPs amongst us.
Proportionally more elderly people die from vehicle crashes when compared to younger people in crashes of a similar severity so the authors suggest this
study could drastically reduce further fatalities on our roads. It also seems safe to presume that there are a few boy racers out there that could benefit from a few classroom lessons. Pick a lane; any lane.
More silly science:
- Wow - Measure the speed of light with chocolate
- Crazy - Vegetable love starts in the womb
- News - How fish get frisky
- Spoof - New element discovered
Or why not try another study of the bleedin' obvious?
