Drinkers Take A Tumble

Drinkers Take A Tumble

When do science and logic come together? Well, never – especially if you’re at the University of Queensland it seems. Scientists there have worked out that (brace yourselves) people who have had a few bevvies are four times more likely to fall over than non-drinkers.

Ground breaking? Well, hardly!

The researchers, who were lucky enough to be paid to do this research, also found that the type of drink and the quantity drunk did not increase injury risk.  However, mixing drinks increases your risk of taking a tumble a further five times.

In addition, people who were injured as a result of drinking alcohol were most likely to have been beer drinkers and have been drinking in 'licensed' premises.

Dr Kerrianne Watt, who did the survey, interviewed 500 patients admitted to the Gold Coast Hospital in Queensland. Patients were asked about how and where they got their injuries, which ranged from cuts and falls to assaults, chokings, burns and near drownings. She said the results “might seem obvious” but that there had been few studies like it.

She said it showed that it was not the type of beverage itself that caused increases in aggression and injury risk, but it was more of a “personality characteristic”.

Either way, it seems pretty obvious to us here that if you drink more you may well just pick up a few knocks and get into a punch-up now and again. Well done Dr. Watt, for studying the bleedin’ obvious!
