Doctor, Doctor...

By Dave Hall

For all you hypochondriacs out there, Dave Hall continues his regular look at a some of the more unusual medical conditions, as well as some you thought you knew all about.

This week: SICK BUILDING SYNDROME

Condition An interesting medical condition where people inside a building experience acute health and comfort problems that seem to be associated with the amount of time they spend there. Sounds like they’re allergic to work if you ask us!!
Contagion – None.

Danger of death – Not fatal but, strangely, although there is no specific illness or cause identified, sufferers often have headaches, eye, nose or throat irritations; coughs; difficulty in concentrating and fatigue. Very occasionally, the patient has thrown themselves from the building for immediate relief.
Incurability? Most patients gain immediate relief from the problem as soon as they leave the building (other than via the 10th storey).

Likelihood of getting time off work An illness where people get sick inside buildings? It’s laughable, but the perfect way of getting time off - “sorry, I can't come in to work because if I do, I’ll be ill”.
Brag-ability Best keep it to yourself - you’ll probably be laughed at by your pals down at the bridge club if you claimed to have this condition.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  -----------------------

Overall ridiculousness A strange one, if you try and pull it off, be selective about what buildings you’re sick of – work – yes; local pub – no way.

More conditions to come soon:

    Anthrax, 'Half-seeing' disorder and more.
