Doctor, Doctor...

Doctor, Doctor...

By Dave Hall

For all you hypochondriacs out there, Dave Hall continues his regular look at a some of the more unusual medical conditions, as well as some you thought you knew all about.

This week: GLOVES AND SOCKS SYNDROME.

Condition Totally ridiculous name, far from ridiculous pain. A rather curious condition leading to the swelling of the hands and feet, only seemingly up until the wrists/ankles and then no more. The swelling, peeling and lesions on the hands are common, giving the appearance of the patient wearing gloves and socks, hence the name.

Contagion – This can be transmitted quite easily, so keep your hands clear.
Danger of death – Your hands and feet may swell up, but not much chance of kicking the bucket. Although with a swollen foot, you’re more likely to hit the bucket if you do kick it.
Incurability? Aside from using a good hand-cream, you’ll just have to take extra care that you don’t knock the skin off while you recover.

Likelihood of getting time off work No one’s going to want to shake hands with you if you have this illness, so there’s a pretty good chance of getting a bit of extra holiday time. It usually gets better after a week or so.
Brag-ability Although you have something rather unusual, it’s not very pleasant and unlikely to impress the lads or lasses down the local. Especially if your pint keeps slipping from your slimy swollen fingers.

Overall ridiculousness A pretty painful condition to have and not one to shout about, but still worth putting on the list of “diseases I have had”. Always guaranteed to be a talking point as soon as you take your gloves off. “Take your gloves off John; oh, you have! Ha ha ha…” Never not funny.

More conditions to come soon:
