Peculiar Periodicals

It turns out there are even more unlikely publications than The Journal of Unlikely Science.
Every Thursday, our very own Dr Steer turns his attention to another improbable periodical.

This week: NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR STUDIES

Name – Now this is more like it, a journal dedicated to big, friendly slobberdogs... what? uh? areas of Canada? Oh don't do this to me.
Click to enlarge Front cover – This is another online journal, so no cover to speak of, but their title image, whilst being dour reminds me of the sculpture in Newfoundland Park, one of the WWI Somme battlefields where we would holiday as kids. Happy days in the trenches.
Off-the-wallness – I wouldn't say it's totally off the wall, but it is pleasingly all over the place. Anything to do with Eastern Canada is fair game be it the history of the Newfoundland flag 1924-1934 to potential geological hazards in the main cities.
Usefulness – Unless you happen to live in Newfoundland there's not likely to be too much that will change your life for the better. Even if you live in Newfoundland you should have a strong interest in flags or geology before trying it.
Impressiveness – It feels more chummy than impressive really - you can imagine a bunch of be-slippered Canadians sitting around the fire, flapjacks in hand discussing the state of wool farming in the nineteenth century. Bless 'em.
             -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall Initial promise was sorely dashed when two breeds of hound became large tracts of the Northern Hemisphere. I still think there's scope for a journal about the inventive ways young labradors destroy property and injure themselves - now that would be a good read.

Impact factor: Sit. Lie down. Wait. Waaaaiiiit. Go geddit!.. No, go get it, not roll over for a tummy rub.

More journal jocularity to come next Thursday.  Until then why not find a phunny phobia?
