Peculiar Periodicals

It turns out there are even more unlikely publications than The Journal of Unlikely Science.
Every Thursday, our very own Dr Steer turns his attention to another improbable periodical.

This week: DEVIANT BEHAVIOR

Name – It's a car crash of a journal - you really don't want to look, but no matter how strongly you try to resist you just can't stop yourself craning over to see if the reality is as colourful as your imagination has made it out to be.
Click to enlarge Front cover – Maybe this is one time when I'm glad of a plain cover. For one thing our librarian just wouldn't be able to cope with the excitement of graphic deviance.
Off-the-wallness – Initially I thought this was pretty off the wall, but then it struck me that it's a pretty natural thing to study. We're fascinated by all things different; surely deviance is simply different but just a bit filthier?
Usefulness – There's everything here from learning to live with OCD to managing the stigma of having a relationship with a stripper - it reads like a 'how to' guide for living in a messed up modern world. Brilliant.
Impressiveness – Someone who's published papers in Deviant Behavior has been to the edge, they've gazed into the abyss of human obscurity and come back with enough limbs and wits to write about it. That's impressive.

Overall An excellent score for an excellent journal.

Impact factor: Let's not even go there shall we.

More journal jocularity to come next Thursday.  Until then why not find a phunny phobia?
