Voodoo: Harmful To Your Health? Voodoo: Harmful To Your Health?

By Steve Robinson

The idea of a Voodoo ritual probably conjures images of sacrificial dolls and large pins. But today religious groups such as Voodoo were warned by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency that their practices pose a significant health risk - to their followers.

The warning from the EPA came after a $60,000 study into the damaging effects of mercury use in ritualistic practices by Voodoo, Santeria, Palo, Espiritismo and other beliefs.

Mercury is traditionally used by such groups, believing the potentially lethal liquid metal can bring love and good fortune to those who use it. To release its potential it is worn in amulets, sprinkled on the ground or added to oil lamps. However, the harmful effects of the chemical can lead to organ damage, problems with the nervous system and seizures.

Seemingly worried about breaching democratic rights to freedom of expression, the EPA are cautious in approaching such groups to warn them of the dangers, scared they may drive Voodoo followers underground.

"Restricting the use of mercury might be challenged as a violation of the First Amendment," the EPA said. "Mercury vapours resulting from ritual uses can pose a health risk. Persons involved in such rituals should be aware of these risks."

So the question for their followers is: Voodoo you want to risk it?
