The Other Lab: A Firework Hero Rises

The Other Lab: A Firework Hero Rises

By Richard Bond

Over 55,000 rockets will take to the sky in a breathtaking display by University of Plymouth ‘Rocket Man’ Roy Lowry next month when he attempts to break the Guinness World Record™ of the most rockets ever launched simultaneously. “Every day scientists do exciting things that no-one has ever done before,” said Roy. “This is a chance to create a public event which demonstrates the fun and excitement of science”

From: University of Plymouth Press Release 17th July 2006.

Ah Ray, good to see you.

And you Professor.

Bad news I’m afraid Ray, student recruitment in science is down again. And we all know what that means! So it’s bums on seats time. We need come up with some sort of public event to demonstrate the fun and excitement of science. Any ideas?

Hm, how about a fungi foray?

A what?

A fungi foray. You know, crawling around some cold damp forest digging up mushrooms.

Fun and exciting?

Fair enough. I suppose there’s always Jim’s exploding custard routine?

That’s the problem Ray, there is always Jim’s exploding custard routine.

OK, how about another Science Pub Quiz?

I don’t think so. Not after last year.

I suppose Dr Rancour’s demonstration of the physics of projectile vomiting was a bit over the top.

And rather more spontaneous that I would have liked.

True. I know, how about setting off fifty five thousand fireworks simultaneously?

Fifty five thousand fireworks?

Why not?

Simultaneously?

Yep.

Now why would you want to do that Ray?

Because it’s never been done!  It would just show that science is all about doing exciting things that no one has ever done before.

You don’t think there is a danger that it might be considered a pointless waste of public money that had little or nothing to do with science and an awful lot to do with public relations?

Good heavens no. And, it could get us in the Guiness Book of Records!

Fifty five thousand fireworks it is then. Good, can you get on to Communications and organise a press release? Thanks Ray.

‘Rocket Man’ if you please, Professor!

Yes, indeed…
