Joe Kissell wanted to be a mad scientist when he was a kid and considers himself to have achieved half his goal; he's not saying which half. He holds degrees in Philosophy and Linguistics, but left academia to work in the computer industry. After spending about ten years managing software development, he switched careers yet again and took up writing about technology full-time. He's the author of numerous computer-related books and ebooks, and a regular contributor to (the U.S. edition of) Macworld magazine.

In his increasingly imaginary spare time, Joe helps to run an Internet publishing company called alt concepts, inc. On their flagship site, called Interesting Thing of the Day <http://itotd.com>, Joe and guest authors write about interesting foods, places, inventions, historical events, and other things of all sorts. Many of the articles involve science and technology, and some of these are featured here on Null Hypothesis. Joe also works on SenseList <http://senselist.com>, a blog of lists; The Geeky Gourmet <http://geekygourmet.com>, which covers food and technology; and I Am Joe's Blog <http://alt.cc/jk>, his personal blog.

When people see Joe wearing his Oxford University sweatshirt, they ask if he went to Oxford, to which he answers "yes" (meaning "I once visited Oxford University, where I bought this lovely shirt"). He currently resides in San Francisco, California.
