Blondes Face Extinction

By Shamini Bundell

Gentlemen prefer extinction?
Back to:
Top Ten Urban Myths
Some vague and un-named ‘researchers in Germany’ have apparently predicted the disappearance of blondes within 200 years according to the BBC and numerous other sources. Since the blonde allele is recessive it is claimed to be slowly decreasing in prevalence as it is overtaken by the dominant darker hair colours.

While increased mixing of races will indeed lead to less blonde people (since the recessive trait will only appear in those people with two copies of the allele), simple mixing is not going to drive the blonde gene to extinction. Without any selection pressure there is no reason for the blonde allele to be lost, and so while we may be seeing less blonde people they’re pretty certain to be popping up all overt the place for some time to come.

This story has been attributed to research by the World Health Organisation, but they have officially denied it and no researchers have yet admitted to performing any research on the matter. There is thought to be no need as yet to develop special breeding programs
