Killer Avocados

A few poor souls are stricken with an avocado allergy. Some make do with living their lives guacamole free, but for the unfortunate few the allergy proves fatal either because they didn’t know they had the problem, or some avocado slipped in under the radar to make its attack.

There are two forms of avocado allergy. The less severe form is associated with an allergy to birch pollen, but usually only comprises minor irritations of the mouth and throat.

The potentially more severe form is associated with an allergy to latex. Bizarrely, the allergens found in the natural rubber latex of gloves, condoms, balloons etc are really similar to those in avocados and some other fruits such as chestnut, banana and kiwi. This is known as the latex-fruit syndrome and symptoms can be life-threatening.
