Star Letter: Flatulent Fish
Every now and again we receive letters that request knowledge beyond our ken. That's when we open it up to you lot. This time around we've an interesting problem involving fish farts. Get your thinking caps on and your gasometers ready...
Dear Sir/Madam/Mr./Mrs./Miss/Ms,
This is by way of being a query.
I have kept fish - and been fishing - for very many years. What I really must know is:
Do fish fart?
If they do not then how do they avoid it? If they do then why do we not see bubbles appear periodically?
Perhaps the diet I have been feeding my fish is unsatisfactory for the purpose of this observation.
All the very best to you and yours
David S. Leyman
Do you know about farting fish? Maybe you reckon you could design apparatus to find out. It's down to you - give us your ideas.

Your Say:
I seem to remember one of the IgNobel awards last year, or maybe two years ago was given to a team who had studied herring farts, so I can only assume that fish do fart (unless of course the herring study was the biggest non-result in history).
