The world's finest photographers have been snapping away all year at any bit of biodiversity brave enough to wander within range. And all for this -  the results of the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition are in. Here are five of the winning entries:

Stripy horses get startled in the Serengeti. 



So there you have it, another year, another winner. Like it or loathe it the photos will be on exhibition at the Natural History Museum from then before they tour the country. See wildphotos.org.uk for more info.
