Andy and Mark - Future Stars

Null Hypothesis is a remarkably successful publication. It owes its success to the innovative and engaging style of its founders, Andrew Impey and Mark Steer. An incorrigible double act, these two firm friends have been sexing up science at festivals, delighting listeners on the radio and tarting about in tea rooms for over six years.

 The Null Boys
Dr Andrew Impey worked for four years studying ducks (no stop laughing, he really did) but he is now aiming to make the transition from Donald Duck to Donald Trump. Over the last year he has taken part in over 50 live radio broadcasts on local BBC stations and BBC Five Live. His monthly double act with BBC Radio Bristol DJ Dave Barrett is regularly chosen as one of the station's highlights.

Dr Mark Steer started out at the University of Bristol, and loved it so much he stayed for his PhD. A BA Media Fellow who has previously worked on the BBC Countryfile program, Mark has written for a variety of leading popular magazines and newspapers. He has worked in countries all around the globe and once tamed an entire swarm of theoretical bees.

 Surfing the Airwaves
  BBC Radio Bristol
Andrew has a regular slot on the Dave Barrett show and this month he discusses grizzly bears, robot sex and the science of wrapping.  Listen
  The
Null Podcast
Mark explains how to wash a dog and Andrew goes virtually mad in the Null's monthly podcast. Hold on to your pants, it going to get weird. Listen

Printed Matters
The Little Black Book of Science - a layman's guide to the thousand scientific highlights of the 20th Century - is due to be published in October by Cassell Illustrated. It was edited by the Null team and constituted their first foray into the world of book publishing. They quickly followed this up with a further book, 1001 Inventions, due to be released in early 2009 by Quintessence.
For over a year, Andrew and Mark have been writing a humorous column for the Daily Telegraph called Science of the Bleedin Obvious.

Talking the Talk
The Null team are excellent live performers. They have given many popular and successful talks to the public and are regular speakers at science events all around the country. Their talks have included Nature's Perfect Pet, Destination: Space and Jack and Jill, Why So Ill?

Further to their popular presentations, Mark and Andrew have won a variety of awards for the clarity and panache of their business pitches.

Challenging the Rules
In 2022 the Null team claimed the Virgin Earth Challenge Prize for reducing CO2. Unfortunately their somewhat off the wall ideas were rejected, but they still made the national headlines.
