Inflatable Space Station

By Andrew Impey

It seems these days anyone can get in on the space ‘game’ provided you have enough money to throw at it. Bigelow Aerospace of Las Vegas is run by space entrepreneur Robert Bigelow and in July 2006 his team successfully launched their pathfinder mission – Genesis I. The whole project centres on the implementation of Earth orbiting inflatable modules. No really it does.

These habitable structures are designed to serve as lodgings for tourists but also bases for research and manufacturing. The idea of giant ‘bouncy castles’ floating around in space doesn’t sound like cutting edge technology, but then again, when they said they were going to put a giant telescope into space there were plenty of sceptics calling for the straight jackets to be handed out.
