Lions Can Eat You

Lions Can Eat You

Every week, the Null dissects the most self-evident studies and pointless papers not to hit the headlines. It's harsh, but funny. This week, the dangers of large predators.

If you are going to share your home with a pride of lions there’s a fair chance you might get eaten; that seems to be the message in the latest African Journal of Ecology.

Despite a huge contraction in their range, lions still thrive in many parts of Africa. Waza National Park in Cameroon is one such region and here the lions live in pastures grazed by domestic herds.

Recent evidence suggests that grazing your animals within the confines of a park populated by lions leads to an increased probability that you’ll get eaten by, of all things, a lion.

What surprised researchers most was the when herdsmen tried to chase the lions away, they just made things worse, creating confusion amongst the herd, scattering animals far and wide, allowing the lions to pick them off at will. There’s a moral here somewhere: don’t mess with lions.

Studies of the Bleedin' Obvious is reproduced from the Null's column in the Daily Telegraph.

Why not try another study of the bleedin' obvious?
