Phunny Phobias

Phunny Phobias

If you met someone who was afraid of paper or wax statues, wouldn't you tell them to stop being so ridiculous and get over it? Every Monday, Null editor Hayley hand-picks another bizarre phobia and tries to work out whether it's real or rubbish.

This week:

Aurophobia:
fear of gold

What's so scary about it?

Well, of course, gold isn't the least bit frightening.  But if there are any piratical aurophobes out there, they are quite welcome to send their terrifying loot to me.  I'll even pay the postage.

What do the scientists say about it?

The scientists don't say much, but the economists seem to have a better idea about it.  Which doesn't help us too much here, because I'm no economist. Suffice to say, aurophobia has something to do with money and banks.

Hayley says:
"Forget the economics, man is by nature greedy - haven't you heard of King Midas? - and anyone who tells you they are afraid of gold is lying.  Rubbish."
