Phunny Phobias

Phunny Phobias

If you met someone who was afraid of paper or wax statues, wouldn't you tell them to stop being so ridiculous and get over it? Every Monday, Null editor Hayley hand-picks another bizarre phobia and tries to work out whether it's real or rubbish.

This week:

Pentheraphobia: fear of the mother-in-law

What's so scary about it (her)?
Do you really need me to tell you?  As if the accompanying picture isn't enough to scare the bejesus out of you, consider the panic that ensues every time your own olds - not to mention anyone else's - suggest popping round for coffee.

What do the scientists say about it?
Although several sources list heart palpitations and nausea as symptoms,  there's not a word from the real hardcore scientists.  But what do they know?

Hayley says:
"I believe in science, and on 99 out of 100 occasions I'll go with what the scientists say.  But when the scientists say nothing, what do you do?  Go with your instinct.  Mother-in-laws seem like a pretty terrifying concept to me, so on this occasion...  Real."

So far: Real 2  Rubbish 3
