Hot Scientist Of The Week

Hot Scientist Of The Week

This week's hot scientist, Matt Roberts, is an aquatic ecologist from Mississippi State University in Starkville. He is currently investigating the impacts of river regulation (e.g., damming, channelization) on energy flow through these systems.

He has this to say about sexiness in science:

"We may be attracted to entities in nature because of the way they behave or because they posses physical beauty. These qualities attract us because they create mystique: Why does this behavior occur? Or, how has this beauty come to be?

"We seek to understand nature as we seek to understand our lovers, prompted to uncover hidden aspects. Science arose as a result of the mystifying qualities of nature and is therefore inherently sexy."
