Google Earth has opened up a whole new world of time-wasting. Whilst most of us were content to spend a couple of minutes trying in vain to find our house before heading out for a pie, some dedicated fellows have been scouring the world for oddities. Mark Steer wantonly reaped the fruits of their labour.

Shipwreck
Lying on her side in the Firth of Clyde, the wreck of the Greek sugar boat, Captayannis, is easily visible on the satellite images. You've got to look harder for the trolleys and traffic cones, however. (more)

Ancient Monkey Art
Huge drawings penned by the mysterious Nazca tribe sometime between 200 BC and 700 AD can still be seen today in Peru. Enjoy an aerial view the Nazca would never have seen themselves. (more)

Giant Flip flops
Great works of art continue to be produced to this day. In 2005 the biannual horticulture festival Bundesgartenshau came to Munich. What better way to celebrate than with some monstrous footwear? (more)

Cruise missile in flight over the U.S.
In 2005, smart-eyed spotters found an image of a cruise missile whisking it's way across the skies of Utah. Was the USA under attack? It caused quite a stir until someone pointed out it had wings. (more)

Blue Whale
If you're going to spot any animal the best chance you've got is a blue whale - the largest animal on Earth. Still, the images aren't clear. Is this really a blue whale hanging around the Cays? (more)

iPod-Wearing Native American
It's hard to believe I know, but there really is a picture of a Native American chap in Canada listening to his iPod. Well, at least that's what the rock formation looks uncannily like. (more).

Fighter in a Car Park
Whilst some things on Google Earth might be optical illusions, there's no denying this. It really is a fighter jet parked in a car park near the German town of Hagen. Why was it there? We simply don't know. (more)

Monster Sperm
Lurking in a lake to the east of Amiens city centre in France is a mysterious looking beast. Is it a prehistoric monster? A genetically engineered super snake? Looks most like an enormous sperm to us. (more)

Gravity-Defying Mini
Minis are the coolest cars in the world, but we never expected this - parked vertically on a Dutch wall. We assume that it's watched the Italian Job  once too often and is now hiding from the Italians. (more)
