Coffee Thighs Are Slimmer

Coffee Thighs Are Slimmer

By Susan Seagreen

Following last week’s revelation that honey is good for kid’s coughs, comes the news that coffee can slim down cellulite. Women who rubbed a solution of caffeine into their thighs every day for a month found that their thighs became significantly thinner.

Cellulite (or gynoid lipodystrophy if you’ve got no friends) is caused when fat deposits collect under the skin in little lumps and bumps. It’s not life-threatening but, if you believe the celebrity magazines, it is life-ruining. It’s lucky then that scientists from Brazil have found a way that people can beat the bulges without having to resort to anything as unseemly as exercise.

The super solution, tested by Omar Lupi and his colleagues at two universities in Rio, contains 7% caffeine. During the trials it honed and toned 80% of the thighs and 68% of the hips that took part.

The exact mechanism by which the caffeine works its magic isn’t totally clear, but it’s possible that the molecule increases metabolic activity within the tissues, causing them to burn more fat for energy.

However, before you all start lathering yourselves up with half a hundredweight of Nescafe, coffee itself probably won’t do the trick. Even strong coffee only reaches around a 2% concentration of caffeine; so instead of getting limber legs, you’ll just end up with thighs smelling like Starbucks.

This research first appeared in the June issue of the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. It was brought to our attention by the positively thin-of-thigh Sara Tove. Thanks.
