First Impressions Count

First Impressions Count

By Samantha Stein

Those considering their latest conquest, and perhaps wanting to know the answer to that Shirelles song, 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?', may be in luck.

According to new research, you don't even have to ask. Scientists have found that both men and women are able to judge on first impressions whether their potential mate is a Sinnerman, or Hopelessly Devoted To You.

Somewhat surprisingly, their research didn't focus on time spent holding hands, or the likelihood of placing a jacket over a puddle for you, but on the shape of men's faces. Those with traditionally more "masculine" features - a square jaw, large nose and small eyes – were rated less likely to be looking for
commitment than men with "softer" features. Women also rated masculine men as less faithful and worse parents than the wimpier looking lads.

Women, on the other hand, were less easy to read, although women with large eyes and lips, like Angelina Jolie, were seen as more attractive and were more likely to be open to short-term sexual relationships.

What's more, both sexes appear to be pretty good at sussing each other out: three quarters of participants in the study correctly identified the sexual attitudes of a group of men and women in their twenties from their photographs alone.

So what does this tell us? Perhaps instead of crying into a pillow over our latest heartbreak we should trust our first impressions a little more.
