Eau de phone by Motorola
By Simon Davies
Motorola have sniffed out the future with their latest patent application. Forget SatNav for pedestrians and MP4 players; what we really need in our mobile phones is an air-freshener. Of course. Now that you mention it I don’t know what I ever did without one…The latest trend in home and car air fresheners is a plug-in device which uses an electric current to cause a stronger scent. There’s already a source of electric current in a mobile - the battery, in case you were wondering – so, reason the electronics giants, “Why not use it to produce scents as well?” They also point to statistics that show that many of the same people use mobile phones and air-fresheners.

I would like to appeal to the imaginative designers at the mobile phone companies: please, use your common “scents”. Design us smaller, lighter phones with clever ways of dialling, connecting and playing music and video. We don’t need them to make us smell nice – we have perfume for that.
